In first place, we have Freedom Akhimienmhonan who is a 25-year-old photographer rooted in Edo State, dedicating his lens to capturing culture, light, and genuine emotion. The winners were officially announced and awarded at our Ninthgrid End-of-Year Showcase held on 12th of December 2025, an intimate gallery-style event celebrating African creators, visuals, and community.

At the event our top 3 winners received ₦500,000 in cash prizes and the top two winning works were displayed alongside other featured creators.

In a continued effort to empower Africa’s creative community, we at Ninthgrid are proud to announce a partnership with Creatives Connect and Ijeworks for an initiative that supports emerging photographers through the upcoming “Master the Lens: Turning Your Art into Income” workshop.

The one-day masterclass, happening on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at The Space Studio, Lagos, will bring together aspiring and early-stage photographers for an immersive experience focused on creativity, storytelling, and the business of photography.

As part of the collaboration, Ninthgrid will sponsor early-stage photographers to attend the workshop at no cost, providing them with the opportunity to access professional training, network with peers, and learn practical steps to turn their creative talent into a sustainable career.

Tell us about your professional background and your journey so far

Born and raised in the city of Uyo, Nigeria, I was always drawn to the art of storytelling. The culture, textures, and bustling energy of my hometown became the backdrop for my earliest inspirations. Photography, for me, was more than just capturing images—it was a way to visualize emotions, preserve fleeting moments, and give voice to stories that demanded to be told.

My journey began with a smartphone camera and an unrelenting passion for the craft. I started by documenting local events and everyday life, delving into the beauty of candid expressions and raw human connections. It wasn’t long before I realized that my vision extended beyond the lens; I had a natural flair for bringing ideas to life, leading teams, and creating narratives that resonated on a deeper level. This realization paved the way for my transition into creative direction.

Each chapter of my career has been marked by growth and learning. Whether it was mastering the technical aspects of photography, collaborating with diverse talents, or overcoming the unique challenges of creative projects, every step shaped me into the professional I am today. I’ve been privileged to work on projects with amazing creatives like Arsharvin John that span personal passion pieces to large-scale campaigns, each one reinforcing my commitment to excellence and innovation.

What fuels your creativity and keeps you passionate about your craft?

As a creative director and photographer, my work is guided by a singular mission: to inspire, connect, and give voice to stories that needs to be told. Through my lens and vision, I strive to amplify voices, celebrate diversity, and reveal the extraordinary in the everyday. My journey is far from over, and I’m excited to continue evolving, creating, and sharing stories that leave a lasting impact.

How did you discover ninthgrid and what inspired you to start contributing to Ninthgrid?

I discovered Ninthgrid through a friend, Abasiofon Bassey. A graphic designer and illustrator. It happened that at the time, I didn’t have the platform to share my works online. But Thanks to Ninthgrid, I am able to be a part of contributing to the growth of Afrocentric Images.

Tell us about one of your images on Ninthgrid.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in your field?

Starting out as a creative director and photographer can be thrilling and challenging.

Here’s some advice I’d offer to help you thrive in the field:

1. Hone Your Craft: Master the technical aspects of photography: lighting, composition, editing, and storytelling. For creative direction, learn how to communicate ideas clearly and lead teams effectively. Explore various styles and niches to find your unique voice, but don’t be afraid to experiment—it’s through trial and error that you’ll grow.

2. Build a Portfolio: Start with personal projects or collaborations that showcase your skills and vision. Your portfolio should tell a cohesive story about who you are as a creative. Keep it updated with your best work and tailor it to the type of clients or projects you want to attract.

3. Network and Collaborate: Connect with other creatives, mentors, and professionals in the industry. Attend workshops, exhibitions, and online communities where you can exchange ideas and opportunities. Collaboration is key—working with others will expose you to new perspectives and push you to think outside the box.

4. Embrace Challenges: Understand that the creative journey is rarely linear. There will be setbacks, rejected ideas, and demanding clients. See every challenge as an opportunity to learn and adapt. Stay open to feedback—it’s a vital part of growing as a professional.

Caleb’s journey into photography began as a simple hobby during the pandemic, capturing candid moments at home. But over time, it transformed into something much deeper—a way to connect the present to the future, to document life as it unfolds. His passion for storytelling through photography has taken him to places, earned him publications in global platforms, and connected him with photographers who have shaped his perspective.

In this interview, Caleb shares how photography became his gateway to the world and his advice for aspiring photographers.

Tell us about your professional background and your journey so far

I started photography during the pandemic are doing covid-19 pandemic 2020, It started as a hobby in our family house, then Photography was as a means of capturing candid moments, trapping time. Over the past years, I have grown deeper in my understanding and perspective. Right now, I see photography as a means of connecting the dots of the present for the future, knowing that every little detail we see today would be used as a reference and memorial tomorrow. Photography has given me the medium to travel beyond myself; through publications and exhibitions. I have traveled and gone to places, I normally wouldn’t travel to. In my journey of photography, I have met some amazing photographers that have inspired and shaped my life and perspective, photographers like Professor Vanessa Charlot, Abigail Montee, Teresa Meka and not to forget Lacy Austin. I have worked as a research photographer, a curator and a virtual teaching assistant for a photography institute in New York. Over the years, I have had my photographs published in Sunlight press, Watershed Review, The Word’s Faire and other other publishing platforms. I am a fellow of Unpublished; Creative Business Studio and a member of The African Photojournalism Database(APJD).

What fuels your creativity and keeps you passionate about your craft?

My creativity is fueled from the knowledge that the world is always on the move and I need to share the happenings and Stories through my photography. My passion to tell stories through my photography gets better with every breaking of the day.

How did you discover ninthgrid and what inspired you to start contributing to Ninthgrid?

I did not discover ninthgrid rather ninthgrid discovered me. I got a message on Instagram from someone that works with Ninthgrid saying; “they like my work and the stories I tell through my Photographs”. I had to quickly check online to make sure, the person reaching out to me was from Ninthgrid. Only to discover that Ninthgrid is a platform that is a unique Afrocentric stock platform that promotes Africa through the content they share. Knowing that Ninthgrid is a dedicated shock platform that promotes the African identity, I accepted with honour to contribute and be part of a community that showcase Africa/Africans to the world.

What do you hope to achieve or inspire through the content you create and share?

I want each of my photographs to bring you into deeper reflections of life. Each photograph should come with a testament of life, process and hope. I want a generation to see photography beyond the beauty but as the essence of life. Every of my content should bring you back to the realities of the activities happening around you. I want every photograph to connect the dots of the present with the future. Every photograph I share should be a document for historians, galleries and museums.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in your field?

To anyone starting out in photography—be it street, documentary, lifestyle, or any other genre—my advice is to give yourself time, go out there, and take Photographs. Develop a systematic approach to your craft and tell your story. Keep your work original and do not let the progress of others pressure you. We each have our own paths, destinies and journeys. So, be true to your journey, remain focused, do not be cut into the web of doing many things, and be consistent in your journey.

In this interview, we go into the world of Solomon Usuanlele, exploring his creative process, inspirations, and the impact of his work.

We would love to hear more about your background? Could you introduce yourself?

I’m Solomon Usuanlele, a filmmaker and photographer with a primary focus on documentary filmmaking. I am the Creative Director of Solfilms, a visual production company dedicated to crafting compelling narratives through visuals that leave a lasting impact.

What elements do you focus on to bring authenticity to your work

For me, storytelling is paramount. Most of my work is non-fiction, telling real-life stories that must be authentic to resonate. This authenticity is what makes the stories unique and impactful. Another key element is the camera I use—specifically, the Sony Alpha mirrorless camera, paired with either a 35mm or 50mm lens. These tools are essential to my process. I almost forgot to mention—sound is also crucial, both in real-time capture and post-production.

What inspires you to capture the everyday life of African People

At the core of my work is the story. It’s what inspires me to document everyday life. Africa, as a continent, holds millions of untold stories. When I encounter a story that resonates with me—one that is authentic, impactful, and inspires positivity—I’m fully invested.

Can you walk us through your creative process? How do you prepare to capture the perfect shot that tells a meaningful story

My process begins with gathering my tools: camera, lenses, and the plan for the project. If I need assistance, I reach out for help; otherwise, I’m ready to head out on my own. I capture elements that contribute to the story—whether video, pictures, or sound. After gathering the footage, I return to my studio to edit, pulling together all the pieces—videos, audio, and every other element that forms the essential framework of the narrative.

The Chess in Slums . This project has been the most rewarding of my career because it allows me to preserve and document people’s stories and personal journeys.

Kelechi, the General Manager of Café One, Nigeria's leading co-working space and coffee shop, shares her insights on how to effectively manage and measure productivity within a remote team. She offers valuable strategies on setting clear goals, tracking progress, and fostering a results-driven environment.

Defining Productivity

For Kelechi, productivity starts with setting specific, measurable goals. Each year, Café One sets an overarching revenue target, which is then broken down into quarterly, monthly, and weekly goals. For example, to achieve a yearly goal of 1 billion naira, the team focuses on hitting weekly targets of 20 million naira.

“Our definition of productivity has evolved as our team has grown. We’ve expanded significantly this year, adding almost 100 new employees. As a result, our targets and the way we measure success have had to adapt,” Kelechi notes. With this growth came the need for a more structured approach to team management, moving from a flat structure to a hierarchical one with clearer reporting lines.

Balancing Metrics and Autonomy

One of the key challenges in remote work is tracking productivity without micromanaging. Kelechi tackles this by setting clear weekly goals and having regular check-ins with her team leaders. “Every Monday, we outline the key goals for the week. If we’re not on track by mid-week, I step in to see what went wrong and how we can course-correct.”

While her team operates remotely, Kelechi occasionally asks employees to come into the office when she senses a drop in productivity. However, she stresses the importance of flexibility. “There are team members who consistently deliver, and I never ask them to come in.”

Tools and Communication

Surprisingly, the simpler tools often work best for Kelechi’s team. While they have experimented with productivity management software like Jira, Miro, and Microsoft Office Suite, Kelechi finds that basic communication tools like WhatsApp are more effective. “We communicate a lot, and WhatsApp groups have become integral to our work. Fancy tools didn’t work as well for us, but we’ve developed internal systems that keep us accountable.”

This pragmatic approach underscores the importance of finding tools that fit your team’s unique workflow, even if they’re less sophisticated.

Key Lessons for Founders

For other business owners managing remote teams, Kelechi emphasizes the importance of breaking down big goals into smaller, manageable tasks. “If your annual goal is 1 billion naira, break it down into weekly targets. Track progress regularly and hold your team accountable for hitting those smaller milestones.”

The most important lesson she has learned is to hire the right people. “Skills can be taught, but passion and dedication cannot,” she explains. “I have team members who send me ideas at 2 a.m. because they’re always thinking about how to move us closer to our goals. That kind of commitment is invaluable.”

Overcoming Productivity Challenges

Kelechi shares a recent example of a productivity challenge she faced with the Café One card launch. Initially, card uptake was low, with less than 200 cards sold. She responded by organizing a physical strategy session with her team leads. “We clearly defined responsibilities and laid out a step-by-step execution plan. The result was a 500% increase in card distribution in a short period.”

Her takeaway? When faced with a challenge, bring your team together, remind them of the larger goal, and break the task into manageable steps.

Final Thoughts

Kelechi’s approach to managing a remote team is built on clear communication, well-defined goals, and a focus on accountability. Her success at Café One shows that even in a remote setting, businesses can foster a productive, engaged workforce by leveraging the right tools and hiring passionate, driven individuals.

"When I saw that and how much she was selling them for, I said to myself, what is this?!" says Francis Isibor.

What inspired you to start working with AI art?

It all started in December 2022. I saw a Christian artist who posted beautiful works generated and upscaled using AI. I was amazed by the quality and the price she was getting for her art. That’s when I realized that AI art could be a profitable and creative avenue. I started researching, and soon after, I was experimenting with AI image generation and animation. It was a revelation that opened new creative doors for me.”

What do you love about AI-generated art?

AI art allows for incredible diversity and inclusivity. I can reimagine biblical stories with all-Yoruba, Filipino, or Hispanic casts. It’s exciting to think about what Abraham would look like as a Nigerian and how that would impact cultural representation. AI gives you the visual tools to dream and continually expand your imagination. It’s a powerful way to explore ‘what ifs’ and create new realities.”

Can you describe your creative process when generating AI art?

I start by looking at what others in the community are creating. I jot down my concepts and use tools like ChatGPT and cloud resources to flesh out ideas. When generating art, I maintain high style parameters to ensure unique and captivating results. Over the past few years, I’ve been impressed with how AI has evolved and the innovative ways people are using it.”

How do you balance human creativity with AI capabilities in your artwork?

AI is just a tool—it’s not the end-all solution. Crafting prompts and generating art requires skill and expertise. Experienced creators know how to control camera angles, textures, and art styles, while novices might miss these nuances. I’ve had clients marvel at how my AI-generated images surpass their previous experiences, thanks to my deep understanding of the medium and its potential.

Have you created generative AI art for stock image platforms? What was that experience like?

Yes, I tailored some images for Ninthgrid, an Afrocentric stock image platform. I’m a big fan of the brand and its Afrocentric focus. Working with Ninthgrid was enjoyable, and it was easy to align my images with their vision.

What are some common misconceptions about generative AI art?

One common misconception is that AI art is simply about typing a few prompts. While that’s true at a basic level, creating quality AI art involves mastering various skills. AI tools are evolving, and while they can quickly produce results, they still require careful guidance and fine-tuning. The process behind creating polished AI art is complex and involves a lot of skill.

My name is Tunde Buremo, and I am the Founder of Cardify.

Can you tell us about your background and what inspired you to start this company?

I've always had a deep interest in technology and its potential to solve real-world problems. Before starting Cardify Africa, I spent several years working in the fintech space, where I observed firsthand the challenges surrounding financial inclusion in Africa. The fragmented payments ecosystem, lack of access to banking services for the unbanked, and inefficiencies in cross-border transactions were issues that deeply concerned me. These experiences, coupled with a strong desire to make a tangible impact, inspired me to start Cardify Africa. I wanted to create a platform that simplifies cross-border utility payments for everyone on the continent, regardless of their location or background.

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when starting your business?

One of the most significant challenges was gaining trust. Fintech, especially in Africa, requires consumers to trust the system and the company behind it. Building that trust from scratch was daunting.

How did you overcome obstacles in the early stages of your startup?

Overcoming these obstacles required a combination of persistence, adaptability, and strategic partnerships. We invested heavily in security and transparency to build trust with our users. Most importantly, I surrounded myself with a team of passionate individuals who believed in our mission as much as I did. Their dedication and expertise were instrumental in overcoming the hurdles we faced.

Can you share a particularly tough decision you had to make and how you handled it?

One particularly tough decision was whether to expand aggressively into new markets or consolidate our position in existing ones. Expansion was tempting, given the demand, but it also carried risks. After much deliberation and consulting with my team, we chose to focus on solidifying our presence in a few key markets first. This allowed us to fine-tune our operations and customer experience before scaling further. It was a difficult decision, but in hindsight, it was the right one, as it set a strong foundation for our growth.

What are some key lessons you’ve learned as a founder?

One key lesson is the importance of resilience. The startup journey is filled with highs and lows, and it’s essential to stay focused and not get discouraged by setbacks. Another lesson is the value of listening—whether it’s to your customers, your team, or the market. Being open to feedback and willing to pivot when necessary can make the difference between success and failure.

How do you stay motivated and continue learning in your role?

Staying motivated comes naturally when you’re passionate about your mission. I’m driven by the knowledge that we’re making a difference in people’s lives. To continue learning, I surround myself with smart people, both within and outside the company. I also make it a point to stay updated on industry trends and regularly engage with other entrepreneurs to exchange ideas and learn from their experiences.

How do you manage work-life balance, especially in the demanding world of startups? Work-life balance is challenging, but I believe it’s crucial for long-term success. I make a conscious effort to set boundaries and prioritize my health. It’s about finding the right balance—understanding that there will be intense periods of work but also recognizing the importance of rest and recharge.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received in your entrepreneurial journey?

The best advice I received was to “focus on the problem, not the solution.” It’s easy to get attached to a particular idea or solution, but what really matters is solving the customer’s problem. Being solution-agnostic and focusing on the end goal has allowed us to innovate more effectively and stay relevant.

What do you think is the most important quality for an entrepreneur to possess?

I believe resilience is the most important quality. The entrepreneurial journey is a marathon, not a sprint. There will be setbacks, failures, and moments of doubt. Resilience allows you to push through those challenges, learn from them, and keep moving forward.

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs looking to start their own tech startups?

Start by deeply understanding the problem you want to solve. Validate your idea with real users and be ready to iterate. Surround yourself with people who complement your skills and share your vision. Most importantly, stay adaptable—technology and markets evolve rapidly, and the ability to pivot when necessary is crucial. And remember, the journey won’t be easy, but it will be incredibly rewarding if you stay committed to your mission.

In the latest edition of the World Happiness Report, Nigeria has been named the happiest country in Africa—a result that seems shocking to many of us. When you consider this statistic against the backdrop of the lived experiences of many Nigerians, it feels like a stark contrast.

Add to that the protests—a powerful reminder of the frustration we face day in and day out. However, if you look closer, a different story unfolds. Amidst the economic turmoil and harsh living conditions, Nigerians know how to find joy, not in spite of the chaos but often because of it. We possess an unbreakable spirit, a sense of communal living that bonds us together and brings warmth and laughter even in difficult times.

We had a stand with a table and chairs where we placed our roll-up banner and other merchandise. As attendees visited our stand, we introduced NinthGrid to them and shared our story. Many attendees deeply resonated with our mission and appreciated the good work we do. Not a single person left our stand without taking home some of the goodies we brought, which were all gone by the end of the event. We shared affirmation cards, stickers, books, and pens. The affirmation cards were especially popular, offering attendees another glimpse of hope that all would be well.

Other sponsors like Propertydey, Jaiye Bistro, Trendit, Creative Bloc, Choplyfe, and Mytherapist. ng also graced the occasion. There was plenty to eat and drink, and the MC kept the event memorable with fun games. Overall, the Afro Optimism event lived up to its name, spreading happy vibes, hope, and optimism to Nigerians.

The World Happiness Report might seem out of place considering the challenges we face daily as Nigerians, but it highlights a profound truth: Despite everything, Nigerians know how to enjoy life and share that enjoyment with others, turning adversity into a source of collective happiness.

Hello, my name is Sarah Shaibu. I am a Senior Product Designer, and I currently work for Pearson, an Education Learning Company.

What does a typical workday look like for you?

My typical workday includes having a meeting with my Product Manager and Head of Product Design. I also have conversations with Engineers about features that are ready for development and features that I am thinking about designing to get their thoughts or feasibility on whether they are possible or not. I typically end my day by checking with Nigeria to see if there are any changes in the priorities set by the Product Manager or by creating my research plan for user interviews that I will have during the week.

Do you have a morning routine that sets the tone for a productive day?

Before I start work, I create personal and professional to-do lists. The personal to-do list contains tasks that are not necessarily related to my work, like laundry, making lunch, and ordering groceries. The professional to-do list contains tasks that I want to achieve professionally that day at work. This helps me understand how to use my time before work, during my lunch break, and after work to get everything done in a day, so I always encourage everyone to have a to-do list.

Another thing that sets the tone for me is prayer. I pray and believe in the power of prayer, so I always pray that I have a great day. Additionally, I have a work playlist. I usually sleep with sleep sounds, which have been proven to improve the quality of sleep. I also have a playlist for when I’m working; it energizes me. It’s low-fi, so I’m not listening to any lyrics, but the tone helps me get into the flow of starting to reply to Slack messages, check Figma to get my design done, and during my lunch break, I engage in an activity that helps me relax, like watching anime or reading a couple of chapters from a book.

Which tool/software is indispensable to your workflow?

Productivity apps like Slack and Loom are indispensable. On Loom, I make a lot of recordings about things that are currently going on in Figma or things that I want to explain to people in the office. I also use Notion because it’s the knowledge base I use for both my personal and professional life. Another tool I find very indispensable is Mobbin, which I rely on for benchmarks on things that are happening. Another one is ChatGPT. It helps me with a lot of quantitative data analysis and qualitative data insights by scouring the web for certain things that I feed into it, like industry patterns or the best way to write survey questions or create research studies. I also use Calendar; it helps me manage life and ensures that I’m on top of everything I need to do.

How do you manage your time while working on different projects?

I manage my time using time boxing with a calendar. I believe in the power of time boxing. I not only time box my 9-5 workday in the office but also time box 24 hours. I timebox 7 hours for sleep, dinner, lunch, breakfast, household chores, work on side projects, and calls with family. Depending on the priority of the day, I always try to look at the entire 24-hour and time box for everything I need to do.

Can you share some of your productivity hacks?

Give each day of the week a specific theme. For me, Mondays are Work and Family time, meaning that after I am done with work, I use the time to call my family and friends. Tuesdays are Work and Chores time. Tuesdays are less heavy for me in the office, so I do my office work and then concentrate my time at home on chores like laundry and groceries. Wednesdays could be Work and Self-Development time. I do my office work and use my extra time to do something practical like watching a tutorial or learning a course. Giving each day a specific theme can really improve your productivity.

Do not underestimate burnout. You will be more productive when you have spaces of time to rest and relax. In all your productive work, create specific downtime—time to shut down your laptop and do something fun, time to sleep, time to have lunch and watch a movie. Actually resting improves your productivity when trying to be productive.
